Kate Owenby is a Partner at Rankin McKenzie, LLC. With nearly 22 years of experience working with a wide variety of national and international companies, Ms. Owenby has a strong understanding of industry-specific accounting and audit issues affecting large, global companies. She now provides contract accounting and business consulting services, such as fractional CFO and finance department oversight, audit readiness, accounting clean-up projects, the development and management of budgets/forecasts, profitability analysis, management recruiting, and due diligence procedures (no opinion rendered). Kate is currently working with The American Board of Anesthesiology.
Ms. Owenby brings extensive experience, after 13 years in public accounting, where she served as an auditor for companies in the start-up to mature phase in manufacturing/distribution, software/SaaS, not-for-profit, and professional services industries. Ms. Owenby’s areas of expertise included the planning, organization, and scheduling of audit engagements, supervised fieldwork, technical review of financial statements, attest services, regulatory compliance engagements, due diligence procedures, implementation of process and controls, managing relationships with private equity/venture-backed companies, and SEC registrants, including the drafting and reviewing of Form S-1, Form S-3, Form 10-K, and Form 10-Q.
Before joining the team at Rankin McKenzie, Ms. Owenby ran her own accounting and business consulting practice. She was a fractional CFO for a large regional medical practice, two not-for-profit foundations and still works with two software/SaaS companies. Ms. Owenby has also served on the Cary Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors/Trustees, National MS Society Board of Trustees, and the NC State University MAC Alumni Board. She has also been a speaker at the NC State College of Management, where she has taken part in various forums related to workplace issues.
Ms. Owenby earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting and continued on to complete a Masters in Accounting, both from North Carolina State University. She has served on a number of nonprofit board committees in the RTP community including Pretty in Pink, Make-a-Wish, Business Friends of the North Carolina Museum of Art and Triangle Family Services.
- Joined Rankin McKenzie as Partner in March 2014. While with Rankin McKenzie, notable projects include the implementation of the accounting and ERP system, NetSuite, setting up global entities and operations in Asia—specifically Korea, Japan, and Taiwan, for a software company, transactional support for a $142M merger and subsequent integration assistance with a Silicon Valley public company, implemented a complete financial system cleanup for a $17M state-wide medical practice and was part of the executive team responsible for obtaining private equity capital for major expansions.
- From 1998 to 2009, served as an Audit Director with RSM. Performed technical reviews on audited and reviewed financial statements, acted as a firm resource for the not-for-profit industry, and consulted on other topics, including financial reporting, foreign currency accounting, multi-subsidiary management and international accounting standards, control environment and internal control structure, business combinations, stock compensation, debt compliance and management, and revenue recognition. Ms. Owenby was also a National CPE instructor on various accounting, auditing, and technology topics to RSM employees and to network firms.
- From 2007 to 2009, was selected and participated in the RSM Partner Development Program, a national program where participants gained strengths in selling, managing clients, public speaking, and profitability.
- From 1996 to 1998, worked with Thomas, Judy & Tucker, a Raleigh-based public accounting firm, as a Senior Accountant serving clients in manufacturing, construction, not-for-profit, and other industries. She also prepared and reviewed tax returns, particularly partnership and corporate returns.
