Lawson Rankin co-founded Rankin McKenzie, LLC in 2002 along with Robert McKenzie and John Autrey. Since that time, Mr. Rankin has concentrated his efforts on promoting the growth of his entrepreneurial client companies, primarily as either a CEO or CFO. As an entrepreneurial financial executive with over 35 years of multi-industry experience, Mr. Rankin offers seasoned entrepreneurial expertise, strategic financial leadership, and executive management talent to companies of all life-cycle stages.
A strategic chief financial officer specializing in promoting growth, Mr. Rankin provides overall financial management of companies, financial reporting and transparency, investor relations, long-range planning, corporate and strategic development, and support for various corporate divisions such as office of the controller, treasury departments, and HR departments. In addition to performing CFO duties for companies in Raleigh and surrounding areas, Mr. Rankin has extensive experience in venture capital financing, leveraged buy-outs, angel financings, mergers and acquisitions, development of strategic business plans, fast-growth and cash-strapped situations, contract administration, and business development activities. In addition, Mr. Rankin has twice served as the CEO of small and growing companies through Rankin McKenzie, LLC.
Mr. Rankin currently serves on the Council of the Yosemite Conservancy, which provides support for the highest priority needs of Yosemite National Park, including funding projects and programs that are essential to the Park’s future. He has served on the Board and as Board Chair for Southlight Healthcare and is also a past Board member and Chair for NC IDEA. Southlight Healthcare provides substance abuse treatment through an integrated care model of mental health and primary care services, helping more than 10,000 people each year achieve life without addiction. NC IDEA fosters economic development in North Carolina by helping start-up companies commercialize their innovations. NC IDEA’s grants program provides funding to help companies make the leap from viable start-ups to the high-growth companies of tomorrow.
In addition to this volunteer work, Mr. Rankin is the Executive Administrator for the Eshelman School of Pharmacy Foundation, which is associated with the Eshelman School of Pharmacy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
A native of North Carolina, Mr. Rankin attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business with a concentration in accounting and Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business, where he earned a Master of Business Administration.
* From 2011 to 2013, while part of Rankin McKenzie, Mr. Rankin was the President of Riemser, Inc., a medical device company serving the dental profession. While at Riemser, a subsidiary of Riemser Pharma
GmbH, Mr. Rankin worked to bring new products into Riemser’s portfolio of bone regeneration materials.
* From 2004 to 2006, while part of Rankin McKenzie, Mr. Rankin served as the Interim CEO for Lumberg, Inc., an ISO 9000-recognized global manufacturer of industrial connectors. During his time at Lumberg, Mr. Rankin helped the company return to profitability and achieved the highest revenue in Lumberg’s history in the U.S. [Question: Did Mr. Rankin leave RM in ’04, come back in ’06, leave again in ’11, and sometime after ’13, return to RM? That’s how this reads, but I’m not sure it’s accurate.]
* From 2002 to 2004 and 2006 to 2011, while part of Rankin McKenzie, Mr. Rankin served as CFO for several high-growth, high-impact companies. He worked as CFO for HexaTech, Inc., a semiconductor materials development company specializing in single crystalline aluminum nitride (AlN) substrates. Add to this his project work for Kyma Technologies and previous experience as CFO of Ziptronix, and Mr. Rankin has more varied experience with local semiconductor companies than any other CFO in the Research Triangle area of North Carolina.
* From 1997 to 1999, Mr. Rankin served as either Interim or Full-time CFO for Engineous Software, Trillium Industries, InvoiceLink Corporation, and Nine Rivers Technology Corporation, where he helped raise over $52 million in debt and early stage equity funding for these companies.
* From 1993 to 1996, Mr. Rankin served as CFO, Secretary, Treasurer, and Board of Directors Member for Network Construction Services Inc. Using venture capital financing, Mr. Rankin helped the company with a successful management buyout of the telecommunications construction division of Sumitomo Electric Fiber Optics Corporation. He also developed and managed all accounting, finance, MIS, and human resource functions as the company’s sales grew from $23 million to over $66 million.
